Why trim?

There are good reasons and bad reasons to trim a tree. The good ones include:

What we don't do

Topping — making heading cuts on large stems to dramatically shorten a tree — looks tidy for a season and then triggers a flush of weak, fast-growing shoots that are far more likely to fail.
